The structural challenge: Glass loads and severe weather exposure
Modern architectural residences demand expansive daylight apertures with minimal frame sightlines. Large triple-glazed units weigh between 200 and 500 kg per sliding sash. Unless the underlying timber frame and roller gearing are engineered with extreme stiffness, large sashes become difficult to slide and risk seal failure under wind pressure.
The ground junction is especially critical. Traditional high door sills present trip hazards and obstruct wheelchairs. However, a low threshold must reliably repel driving horizontal rain without allowing water to infiltrate the subfloor structure.
